211 New York History

Prior to 1998

Members of the NYS AIRS Board expressed interest in the 3 digit concept.

Through a congressional request, learned that there were many competing requests for a three digit number at the national level. Advice was to seek designation at state levels.

1997

Atlanta 2-1-1, AIRS, UW of America and other partners petition the FCC for designation of 211.

AIRS Board member and past NYS AIRS President, Deb Woods, chairs the 211 Collaborative Steering Committee.

December 1998

NYS AIRS President (Linda Daily) and Past President (Deb Woods) meet with NYS Public Service Commission staff who felt the idea had merit, but would wait for the FCC to rule on the 211 Collaborative's petition.

April 1999

NYS AIRS Annual Meeting held at Cornell University. Judy Windler, Texas I&R Network and current 211 Collaborative Co-chair, speaks to NYS AIRS members via teleconference. Provides one hour education about 211.

June 21, 1999

NYS AIRS 211 Task force convenes

  • Commitment to continue.
  • Establishment of listserv. 211@FIRSTwp.org

July 1999

NYS AIRS Board votes to become a partner of the National 211 Collaborative.

  • Statement of Purpose/Outcomes.
  • 211 Call Center Operational Criteria.
  • Regions.
  • Request to UW Executives for Susan Hager to Co-chair Task force.

September 7, 1999

NYS AIRS 211 Task Force Meeting #3.

  • Susan Hager becomes Co-chair.
  • Motion to call the whole initiative "211 New York" is adopted.
  • Consensus reached on concept paper (Statement of Purpose).
  • Consensus reached on Call Center Operational Requirements.
  • Motion to use a "draft regional call center map" is adopted.
  • Identification of need to survey all NYS I&R providers. Purposes: Identify interest in 211 call center concept; identify stake-holders in each county; identify gaps in datbase management/I&R provision; further define potential regional centers.
  • Three demonstration regional sites include: Western NY (Central Referral Services); Monroe County area (Life Line); and Lower Hudson (United Way and FIRST).
